| Train-A-Bully is a website I started for 'Bully' Owners aka 'Pit Bull' Owners to come to for breed education, and advice in training their dog(s). I got my first American Pit Bull Terrier 26 years ago and have owned Pit Bulls ever since. I have seen these dogs go from an uncommon dog to own, to being very |

| Pit Bulls are very intelligent, well natured, extremely loyal dogs. They are by nature very good with people. Making them, when well managed and responsibly owned, some of the best family dogs, therapy dogs and search & rescue dogs out there. The American Canine Temperament Test Society lists this breed as having one of the most stable temperaments of any of the purebreds, right up there with golden retrievers. Pit Bulls have been referred to as 'The Nanny Dog' in England for many years, because they are so good with children. In reality a well-bred, well socialized and well trained pit bull is one of the most delightful, intelligent and gentle dogs imaginable. |

Today, sadly, pit bulls have acquired a reputation as unpredictable, dangerous and vicious. Their sometimes intimidating appearance has made them attractive to the wrong kind of owner - people who are looking for a macho dog and who encourage aggressive behavior. This has caused the breed to be over bred. What happens when a breed becomes over bred and popular? More “un-responsible” breeders produce puppies at a rapid rate for money and do not breed properly, and sell these puppies to anyone who comes a long. Not everyone should own a dog, or knows how to raise a dog, and these type of breeders could care less. Therefore, these dogs are raised wrong (from abuse to neglecting their animal needs) and end up unbalanced (and become aggressive) or just unwanted. These are the dogs that flood the shelters and rescues today.
overpopulated. From being a family dog to a dog sought out by gangsters and drug dealers to use as protectors and image. These dogs are what I will be talking about on this site, by using the term Bully or Pit Bull.

My Advice/Tips on TRAINING come from years of experience owning and being around Pit Bulls, and a lot of studying and research. While I believe there is truth in all cases are different, the thing that is the same is the psychology. Dog Psychology is what works on any breed, and from experience I believe it is the only way to truly rehabilitate an aggressive dog. After all it is what the owner does or doesn't do that causes this behavior. Dogs are by nature 'Pack' animals and once the stability of the pack is broken, things happen.
Remember, training should be a 24/7 commitment. Not just an hour a day. Because everything you do or don't do with your dog is a form of training, as you and your dog are always making decisions. So, they can either be getting their behaviors reinforced or not.
I am hoping to help owners keep their dog balanced and live a happy life. Dogs that are aggressive are not living a happy life. I don't care how much love you give them, they are still living an unbalanced life, and therefore they are not living the way they were intended to. If you do have an aggressive dog, I suggest you get a trainer to work with. Do your research, and make sure they have worked with Bully Breeds before and ask for references for those dogs they have helped. |
