Feeding

Feeding is a very social activity for dogs. It fulfills every side of them and is a very important part of their day. It is very important that your Pit Bull has earned their food. How can you do this?
In the morning, the best thing to do is to exercise your dog(s) when they wake up, then take them for a nice walk. After the walk, let them cool off for about 15 minutes. Now they are at their hungriest, and all they want to do is eat. As the Pack Leader, you should eat first (whether it is a meal or a small snack) just let them see you eating first. (You can do this during their "cool off" time). This is what dogs in their natural habitat do - wake up, walk/run, hunt, pack leader eats first.

When it is time to let them eat, feed the calmest dog first and go down the line. Make them look at you, not their bowl, until you give them the command to eat. This will not only reward the best behavior, and show the others what they need to do. But, it will also give you the respect of "Pack Leader" from the pack. Puppies work for food by waiting patiently for their mother. This is a form of psychological exercise, and it’s important for a healthy state of mind.

Never feed a dog that is excited, anxious, aggressive, or displaying any other negative behavior as this reinforces the unwanted state of mind.
If you have trouble with food aggression, even if it is mild, you should call in a professional. Food can throw your dog into a very primal state, so it is best to get help before the problem intensifies.

Are you feeding your dog a good quality food? Don't be fooled! Proper diet and exercise is what is going to give your dog the longest life possible. Don't you owe it to them to make sure they are eating good quality food?

Every home with dogs should have APPLE CIDER VINEGAR (ACV)
- BENEFITS
For centuries, the benefits from cider vinegar to fight infection, promote digestion, fighting osteoporosis, have been well known.
It has multiple uses for dogs: alleviating allergies, arthritis, establishing correct pH balance of the system.
One of the first goals on the way to great health is to restore the body's pH to the alkaline range. As nearly all chronic illness takes place in a body that has become acidic due to the gradual depletion of its mineral reserves, it is logical to check on the body's acid/alkaline balance and work towards maintaining it in the alkaline range. The state of the body's acid/alkaline balance can be easily measured by testing the urine using pH strips.
Added to the drinking water, ACV has shown to maintain the acid/alkaline balance of the digestive tract. To find your dog's pH level, get some pH strips at your local drugstore, first thing in the morning test your dog's urine. If the strip reads from 6.5 - 7.0, then your dog's system is what it should be. If the pH is higher, then the system is too alkaline, ACV can help to establish a correct balance.
Use a few drops in your dog's ears after cleaning to avoid ear infections. ACV can be used in the prevention of muscle weakness, arthritis, calluses on elbows and hocks and joints, pimples, and sore joints. It has also been shown to be useful in the prevention of bladder and kidney stones, bladder and kidney infections.
A dog with a correct pH balance is less likely to be bothered by fleas, black flies, ticks, and other external parasites. Less chance of ringworm, staph infections, streptococcus, mange. If you are already experiencing these problems, dilute ACV with equal amounts of warm water and sponge onto your dog's coat.
You can also mix it up and add to a spray bottle and spray the coat. The ACV balances the pH of the skin and makes it less desirable to bacteria, bugs and infection. Not only that, but their coat is very soft and shiny. Bee and wasp stings, as well as itchy mosquito bites can be soothed by applying undiluted apple cider vinegar to the affected area.
INTERNAL BENEFITS & EXTERNAL BENEFITS:
Rich in enzymes & potassium
Naturally support a healthy immune system
Helps control weight
Promotes digestion & ph Balance
Helps remove body sludge toxins
Helps maintain healthy skin
Helps promote youthful, healthy body
Soothes irritated skin
Relieves muscle pain from exercise
INTERNAL BENEFITS: ACV is rich in enzymes and potassium. ACV is a natural antibiotic germ fighter, Fights E Coli and other bacterias. Apple Cider Vinegar is a good remedy for food poisoning and helpful in digestive upsets. ACV helps control and normalize weight, helps to improve digestion. ACV helps relieve arthritis stiffness. ACV removes body sludge and toxins.
EXTERNAL BENEFITS: ACV helps to maintain healthy skin, promote youthful, healthy bodies. Soothes pain of sunburn, the itch from bug bites, and the sting from plants. ACV helps prevent dandruff, itching scalp, baldness, dry skin. ACV soothes tight aching joints, sore muscles.
Apple Cider Vinegar is proving very beneficial to people or animals with arthritis because it breaks down calcium deposits in the joints while remineralizing the bones. It has shown to be equally beneficial to dogs with hip dysplasia.
ACV is also effective for urinary tract infections and it lowers high blood pressure. In animals, it is helpful in skin and coat problems. It is helpful in replacing potassium depletion. Use one teaspoonful in the dog or cat’s drinking water daily as a healthy tonic. Two teaspoonfuls in a pint of water, for yourself. Drink a daily tonic of apple cider vinegar to help you keep the right pH balance in the urinary tract since the proper acidity creates an inhospitable environment for bacteria and yeasts that cause these infections.
ACV has been found to protect arteries from harmful buildup of plaque. Many heart attacks are caused by high fats and cholesterol in your blood. The fiber in ACV helps to absorb fats and cholesterol by expelling them from the body as waste materials. ACV is used to promote the health of veins and capillaries, it is also useful in assisting in the health of the heart. The potassium found in apple cider vinegar is also beneficial to the heart.
The dietary fiber in ACV is also helpful in controlling glucose levels in the blood.
Minerals like manganese, calcium, magnesium, silicon and iron develop bone mass and make them stronger. . Rich source of amino acids, vitamins and minerals.
Boosting the immune system and acting as a natural antiseptic and anti-biotic. Apple cider has acetic acid, plus ion-futynic lactic and propionic acids. It is the richest source of amino acids known.
Apple cider cannot cure cancer, buy it is a valuable to have around to help fight free radicals in the body. Beta-carotene, found in apple cider vinegar, is a powerful antioxidant, which helps to neutralize the free radicals formed in the body through oxidation. To prevent these free radicals, and to keep them in check, we need antioxidants to rid our body of these potentially dangerous compounds. Left alone free radicals have the run of our bodies, they damaging cells, which leads to degeneration. The pectin in apple cider vinegar adds fiber to the diet, a high fiber diet to help prevent cancer, especially colon cancer. Fiber binds with certain cancer causing compounds in the colon, and speeds up their elimination from the system.

Common Foods That Are Harmful Or Even Fatal to Dogs
If you suspect that your dog may have ingested one of these foods or another harmful substance, call the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center National Hotline: XXX-XXX-XXXX

Avacados are toxic to dogs Avocados (fruit, pit, and plant) are toxic to dogs. Avocados contain a toxic component called persin, which can damage heart, lung and other tissue in many animals. They are high in fat and can trigger stomach upset, vomiting and even pancreatitis. Symptoms of toxicity include difficulty breathing, abdominal enlargement, abnormal fluid accumulations in the chest, abdomen and sac around the heart. The amount that needs to be ingested to cause signs is unknown. The effects on dogs and cats are not completely understood. GI signs are commonly seen and should be treated symptomatically. In addition, the animal should be monitored closely for other clinical signs related to the cardiovascular system. (This information comes from veterinarians, the American Veterinary Medicine Association, and the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center.)
Onions can be fatal to dogs Onions destroy red blood cells and can cause anemia, weakness, and breathing difficulty. Even small amounts can cause cumulative damage over time. This includes onions or chives - raw, powdered, dehydrated, or cooked.
Garlic is harmful to dogs Large amounts of garlic cause the same problems as onions. Garlic contains only a small amount of the problematic substance that is in onions. Just as with people, moderation is the key.
Grapes and Raisins can be fatal to dogs Grapes and raisins can cause kidney failure in dogs. As little as a single serving of raisins can kill him. If the dog doesn't eat enough at one time to be fatal, he can be severely damaged by eating just a few grapes or raisins regularly.
Tomatoes can be fatal to dogs Tomatoes (plant and fruit) contain tomatine, an alkaloid related to solanine. As the fruit ripens, the tomatine is metabolized. Therefore, ripe tomatoes are less likely to be problematic for animals. Clinical signs of poisoning include lethargy, drooling, difficulty breathing, colic, vomiting, diarrhea or constipation, widely-dilated pupils, paralysis, cardiac effects, central nervous system signs (e.g., ataxia, muscle weakness, tremors, seizures), resulting from cholinesterase inhibition, coma and death. (This information comes from veterinarians, and the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center.) (All parts of the plant except the tomato itself are poisonous to humans, although some people are sensitive to the ripe fruit also.)
Tomatoes also contain atropine, which can cause dilated pupils, tremors, and heart arrhythmias. The highest concentration of atropine is found in the leaves and stems of tomato plants, with less in unripe (green) tomatoes, and even less in ripe (red) tomatoes.
Nutmeg is can be fatal to dogs Nutmeg can cause tremors, seizures and death.
Caffeine is harmful to dogs Caffeine (from coffee, coffee grounds, tea, or tea bags) stimulates the central nervous and cardiac systems, and can cause vomiting, restlessness, heart palpitations, and even death within hours.
Xylitol Sweetener can harm dogs Diet products containing the sweetener Xylitol can cause a sudden drop in blood sugar, resulting in depression, loss of coordination and seizures. Unless treatment is given quickly, the dog could die.
Macadamia Nuts can harm dogs Macadamia nuts can cause weakness, muscle tremor and paralysis. These symptoms are usually temporary.
Walnuts are poisonous to dogs Walnuts. When dogs eat the seed hulls, they can get an upset stomach and diarrhea. The real problem is the fungus or mold that attacks walnuts after they get wet (from rain or sprinklers), which produces toxins. If the fungus or mold is ingested by your dogs, they can become very ill and possibly die. Signs that should alert you to walnut poisoning are vomiting, trembling, drooling, lack of coordination, lethargy, loss of appetite, and jaundice indications such as yellowing eyes and gums. Severely affected dogs can produce blood-tinged vomit or stools. Dogs can take several days to exhibit serious signs of illness.
Chocolate can be fatal to dogs Chocolate can cause seizures, coma and death. Baker’s chocolate is the most dangerous. The darker the chocolate, the more dangerous it is. But any chocolate, in large enough amounts, can kill a dog. An ounce of chocolate can poison a 30-pound dog, and many dogs will happily consume more than this. The symptoms may not show up for several hours (and so might make you think all is well), with death following within twenty-four hours. A dog can consume milk chocolate and appear to be fine because it is not as concentrated, but it is still dangerous.
Fruit Pits are toxic to dogs Apple seeds, Cherry pits, Peach pits, Pear pips, Plums pits, and Apricot pits contain cyanide, which is poisonous. While a few apple seeds may not cause a problem, the effects can accumulate over time if they are given to dogs regularly. Dogs should not be allowed to chew on a peach pit, cherry pit, apricot pit, or plum pit. Chewing can allow ingestion of cyanide. Chewing could also result in the pit being swallowed, causing continuous exposure to cyanide, or could cause the dog to choke.
Salt is harmful to dogs. Too much salt can cause kidney problems. Also, large breeds of dogs that eat salty food may then drink too much water and develop bloat, which is fatal unless emergency treatment is given very quickly.
Ham and Bacon are bad for dogs. Ham and bacon contain too much fat and too much salt, and can cause pancreatitis. Also, large breeds of dogs that eat salty food may drink too much water and develop a life-threatening condition called bloat. This is where the stomach fills up with gas and within several hours may twist, causing death.
Liver too much, is harmful to dogs. Raw liver or too much cooked liver (three servings a week) can lead to vitamin A toxicity. This can cause deformed bones, excessive bone growth on the elbows and spine, weight loss, and anorexia. Check the label of your canned dog food to be sure that it does not contain liver if you are giving your dog liver also.
Wild Mushrooms can be fatal to dogs Wild mushrooms can cause abdominal pain, drooling, liver damage, kidney damage, vomiting, diarrhea, convulsions, coma, or death.
Raw Egg Whites alone are bad for dogs. Raw egg whites contain a protein called avidin, which can deplete your dog of biotin, one of the B vitamins. Biotin is essential to your dog’s growth and coat health. The lack of it can cause hair loss, weakness, growth retardation, or skeleton deformity. Raw egg yolks contain enough biotin to prevent the deficiency, so this is not a problem with raw whole eggs. Raw egg yolks could contain salmonella, so you should get your eggs from a reliable source or cook the eggs.
Grains Large amounts are bad for dogs Grains should not be given in large amounts or make up a large part of a dog’s diet, but rice is generally safe in small amounts.
Cooked bones can kill dogs Cooked bones can splinter and tear a dog’s internal organs.
Potato peels and Green potatoes are dangerous.
Dairy products can be harmful to dogs. Dairy products are high in fat, which can cause pancreatitis, gas and diarrhea. A small amount of non-fat, plain yogurt is usually safe.
Turkey Skin – High fat foods, such as turkey skin, can be hazardous to your dog. Since the skin is hard to digest, it can lead to pancreatitis. If you still want to share your bird, give your dog a small piece of white meat.
ALCOHOL
Dogs need their vegetables cut up. Dogs can't digest most vegetables (carrots, green beans, lettuce, potatoes or yams) whole or in large pieces.
